Whether someone needs a large or small viral lode to become seriously ill is not empirically known. The only way to test the theory would be to infect confirmed healthy people with varying amounts of the virus. My non expert opinion is that an 85 year old with a heart and lung condition, I doubt it matters whether they get a small viral lode or a large one....

Good on ya BM for exercising your freedom of choice when it comes to indoor dining. However, common sense among anyone halfways aware has told us right from the beginning that underventilated areas are a poor place to be, and I read articles about virus in the air concentrations way back in May. Which is why I haven't darkened the doors of any restaurant since the start of the pandemic. Supermarkets with huge air volumes are far safer. One study measured how long it took one carrier to infect a certain volume of air, and recommended not spending more than a certain time in such a situation depending on the size of the room. My response has been to avoid such places as restaurants entirely, because I cannot calculate volume in a second or two upon entry, nor judge the adequacy of ventilation.

You also need a certain viral load to get a case of the disease because your body's immune system can fight off small amounts. An article in the Guardian last month had a couple of immunologists speculating that getting very small numbers of the virus would likely be good for you, acting like a vaccine, giving your bod time to develop an immune response before facing a big splat from an unmasked contaminated human dope wandering about claiming masks are useless.

The virus itself attaches to mucous cells in your body, and free virus spores available to be exhaled in the mist of your breath aren't there in huge quantities. So spit is far more dangerous than aerosols due to the large number of spores which can overwhelm the immune response, and then you got it bad.

In other words, you have to exhibit common sense. The average citizen is highly uninformed, and even well-educated friends of mine seem to have "avoided" reading about the disease. Everybody wants a safe/unsafe switch, and none is available, which your average clod gets all excited about.

If nobody was worried about aerosols in Canada, then what was all the fuss about in August about retrofitting ventilation in old school buildings, and the $500 million the feds gave away for same? Why did they call for outdoor classes to hoots of derision, when photos surfaced that showed we did exactly that in Canada a 100 years ago with the Spanish flu?

When I look back at what was said in March (your saying USA, OZ and NZ clamped down on entry in early February is apochryphally incorrect by a month) all public health wanted was slowing of transmission so as to avoid clogging up ICUs, and spreading out the disease infections over time. Nobody said it wasn't going to happen anyway; the second wave was mentioned back in March. Now that the second wave is upon is, it seems that the seriousness of most cases is far lower than it was back in March/April, precisely because of precautions, latterly including masks. Most people are getting a lower viral load now than they did then, so infections are not as bad. Christ, even fatso Trump got away with it.

For Christ's sake, can people use a little common sense, rather than going around bleating piteously about this and that as if they'd discovered some new "truth"? Jesus.

BMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6283396870042562820.post-9898361893710172252020-10-04T20:36:12.709-04:002020-10-04T20:36:12.709-04:00Rereading what I wrote and It occurred to me that ...Rereading what I wrote and It occurred to me that the most accurate thing to say is that there is no "proven" benefit that masks provide any benefit in limiting viral infection, not at the highest levels of scientific investigation.....science is a process after all, it doesn't stop when it reaches the view to which one ascribes. In pooled analysis, we found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51–1.20; I2 = 30%, p = 0.25) (Figure 2).

Now, if you have some peer reviewed published science on a Radomized Control Trial (RCT) that shows masks do reduce viral infections (any virus) then I would be very interested in seeing it, I do my best to not live in an echo chamber....if all you have is the comparative and visual studies, I've already read a number of them.

Observation and comparative analysis are useful, but not the Gold Standard that RCTs are. You quote all these studies you must spend hours looking for that agree with your viewpoint, and then shoot yourself in the foot metaphorically-speaking with a useless "mask"? I don't get it.

The box instructions on my reusables say discard after four hours use. On a shopping day, I might put an hour and a half on mine total before chucking it out. Considering what it costs to run the car, 50 cents for a mask isn't much. I also wear single-use gloves.

I have not purchased the reusable cloth masks. People forget to wash them from what I've seen and fashion prints are so important, dontcha know. At the beginning back in March and April, I used a very large double thickness bandana which went halfway to my waist that I boiled in a saucepan of water after each use. The cheap three ply blue masks were a godsend, and they have bendable wire inside to allow the nose to be gripped. Cloth masks fall off my small nose and fog up my glasses due to the lousy fit, allowing breath to escape upwards. So forget the reusable cloth masks, I feel. I keep a half-dozen new single-use masks in my car, along with wipes.

That's resp-ir-atory, not respitory, btw.

BMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6283396870042562820.post-22329716701718277222020-08-07T13:20:26.196-04:002020-08-07T13:20:26.196-04:00A note to anyone wishing to comment, don't mis...A note to anyone wishing to comment, don't misrepresent what I have written. I just deleted a post by an anonymous poster that claimed I said SARS-Cov-2 is "no worse" than the common flu, which is completely false. I have always said that Covid is worse than the flu, but I have questioned the messaging that Covid is at least 10x more deadly.

According to Statistics Canada influenza/pneumonia ranked as the 6th leading cause of death in 2018 (google it) with 8,511 Canadians falling victim. Canada has currently reported almost 9,000 deaths, so obviously Covid is worse.

With that being said Ontario Public Health has published Infection Fatality Rates (IFR) based on age and for children aged 0-9 years they peg IFR at 0.0022% which makes the flu more deadly for this specific demographic.

Opinion is fine, but back it up with facts and not emotion and don't misrepresent what I've written to prove a weak point. Masks are not a replacement for keeping distance and hand washing. Hand washing, from what I'm reading, is vital after removing the mask, and given that there isn't always a sink and soap handy outside of places like pharmacies and grocery stores, those wearing masks might do well to carry hand sanitizer with them.

I was just in the grocery store on Sunday evening, I was waiting for a lady in the bread aisle who was wearing what looked like a medical mask, the kind with folded material. She was trying to read the expiry date but was having trouble (she wore glasses), so she pulled the mask down then examined the tag and then returned it to the shelf and picked up another, checked and put it in her cart....and then proceded shopping with the mask below her nose. I spoke with here casually and pleasantly but didn't say anything as I myself (like 90% of the patrons and all the staff) wasn't wearing a mask and it didn't seem appropriate to me to offer advice when I'm not wearing one myself.

Later on my way into work I stopped at Tim Horton's. At the drive thru the young man handling my order and taking my payment was wearing a mask (his employer requires it) but it wasn't covering his nose, there were 2 other employees I could see, one wearing it properly the other with the nose also exposed. I remarked that he had my sympathy, having to wear the mask...he complained how hot and uncomfortable it is to wear all shift long. I remarked about it not covering his nose, adding "not that I care"....and that I wouldn't want to have to wear one for hours on end. I then told him to be careful when removing it, to do it by the loops and then to wash his hands immediately because that warm moist cloth could have goodness knows what on it besides just SARS-Cov-2....this world is full of pathogens....he thanked me warmly.....

Anyway....I hope you and your wife are keeping safe. The only reason we were told it was necessary to utterly turn our world upside down and destroy people's lives was because our hospital system was going to be over run....and it has not happened. It is long past time we started basing policy on EVIDENCE, not on failed computer modeling.

Gordie Canukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11889201338151732092noreply@blogger.com
